This Design section includes work done going back over fifty years. After graduating from College in Los Angeles I immediately was hired and was taken in as an associate in an architectural delineation company with three other members. I worked there and honed the skills involved in the tedious creation by hand of accurate perspective drawings before the advent of CAD systems. I then decided to move to Washington and Oregon where I took up my fine arts career. Next came a move to Texas and my start in spec residential design and remodelling work. Next a two year painting trip to Mexico and then a move to Oregon where I was very successful with art sales. Then back to Texas and Arkansas before finally ending up here in Carmel by the Sea where I took up tile installation design and illustration while working at Carmel Stone Imports as their manager and independently.
This Design section covers some of the different areas of design I have been involved with other the many years and I have included samples and explanation of the process and techniques involved.

Doane Design provided tile and stone design services for residential and commercial building owners, as well as architects, designers, building suppliers and contractors for the local area for the last 25 years. His experience in both home design and the fine arts supported the delivery of fresh and innovative tile and stone project solutions that were custom designed to the aesthetic as well as functional and budgetary needs of the his residential and commercial clients. In college he was taught the techniques of architectural perspective using the very tedious and slow hand drawn layout and drawing methods before the computer CAD systems made them obsolete. After graduating he took this skill with him to work as an associate with three others at a top illustration company in Los Angeles where he further honed his skills. When he finally ended up in Carmel in 2000 his drawing skills had developed to the point where he could freehand draw perspective views like the one on the right with no computer or drafting equipment help. He worked most of this time at Carmel Stone Imports near the Barnyard, being one of the original members who started with the company and was their manager and designer of their advertisements. brochures and tile installations.
This is a small sampling of some of the designs done for custom customer tile installations done over the years. There are several hundred. On the upper left is one of the advertisements done for Carmel Stone Imports in Carmel. These hand drawn illustrations not only helped the customers visualize the final results, but were also invaluable to the tile installer so that he would know what the design objective was and for him to order the often times custom made artisan tiles that needed quite a bit of lead time if not in stock.
In college I was taught the techniques of architectural perspective using the very tedious and slow hand drawn layout and drawing methods before the computer CAD systems made them obsolete. After graduating I worked as an associate with three others at a top illustration company in Los Ang Angeles creating “delineations,” architectural renderings. They were laid out using a complicated mathematical geometric system on long tables using guide sticks and drafting tools. Then these layouts were traced over using ink pens, the buildings drawn in and “entourage” added consisting of people, cars, landscape elements, etc. After that the drawing was taken to a printer where it was printed on a mylar sheet, then back to us where we back painted it using acrylic paints and finally, it was mounted on a back board and framed for the client. Most of this work was commercial buildings for larger development architects and ocassionally residential buildings for architects. buildings. This is a small sampling of some of these.
Speculative residential building projects in Texas and numerous custom remodelling projects in California, Oregon, and Texas were preceded by architectural design training at California State University, Northridge, and Santa Monica City College, California. An associate with an Architectural design/graphics firm in Los Angeles honed his skills with perspective renderings and presentation techniques. Later employment with Xerox Corporation Data Services provided Doane additional skills in computer graphics and AutoCAD design methods. Working for many years at Carmel Stone Imports in Carmel, and independently, refined his interior design abilities.
